

TowerThe door buckled under the thick sole of his boot, and the captain thrust his sword into the darkness that lay beyond, waving it this way and that to challenge anyone lurking within. He snapped his fingers impatiently at a crossbowman near him, keeping his eyes fixed on the blackness inside the tower. A torch was proffered into his waiting hand, and he swung the flame in through the door, cursing softly as sparks fluttered onto his bare forearm. HawkHawk was an Observer. It was based on the outside of the satellite city Nova, a giant space station that orbited Tarak. There was one on every planet that had been colonised. It provided docking for the starships of visiting races, and was a useful alternative to living on the planet, where conditions were unpredictable. It was safe. Waging war on a satellite city would be met with unlimited force in any system. The Observers upheld this rule. They knew everything that happened on the surface, and everything that occurred in the satellite cities. They policed the Sectors and kept the peace only because the alternative was pure desHawk
